The Pallekele Miracle: Brook's 100 Powers England into the Semis

When the dust settled at the Pallekele International Stadium on Tuesday night, the scoreboard read like a thriller novel. England (166/8) defeated Pakistan (164/9) by two wickets with just five balls to spare.

But the real story wasn't just the win; it was the sheer will of one man: Harry Brook.

First Half: Farhan Fights Alone

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Pakistan’s innings was a tale of "what could have been." Sahibzada Farhan was the standout performer, anchoring the side with a gritty 63 off 45 balls. While Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman chipped in with 25 each, the middle order struggled to navigate the spin trap set by Liam Dawson (3/24) and Adil Rashid.

A late cameo by Shadab Khan (23 off 11) pushed Pakistan to a competitive 164, but on a surface that seemed to be slowing down, many felt they were 15 runs short of a winning total.

The Early Storm: Shaheen’s Triple Strike

Pakistan’s defense couldn't have started better. Shaheen Shah Afridi was in "Assassination Mode," removing Phil Salt for a golden duck on the very first ball. He followed it up by dismissing Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell within the powerplay. At 35/3, England looked like they were heading for a collapse.

The "Captain's Knock" to End All Knocks

Enter Harry Brook. While wickets tumbled around him, the England captain played a different game entirely. Brook smashed 100 off just 51 balls, including 10 fours and four towering sixes.

In doing so, he broke two massive records:

  1. First captain to ever score a century in a T20 World Cup.

  2. Fastest century by an Englishman in T20 World Cup history (50 balls).

He reached his ton with a boundary before finally being cleaned up by Shaheen Afridi (who finished with a valiant 4/30). By then, however, the damage was done. Will Jacks (28) and Jofra Archer guided the tail home in a frantic final over to seal the 2-wicket win.

What This Means for the Tournament

With this victory, England becomes the first team to officially qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-finals. For Pakistan, the road is now incredibly narrow. After their opening game against New Zealand was washed out, they are left with just one point and must win their final match against Sri Lanka while hoping other results go their way.
