A dramatic and unsettling incident unfolded earlier this week at the Grace Mountain Chapel auditorium in Accra, the venue for the popular Alpha Hour prayer movement, when a woman was arrested in connection with an attempted arson attack on the church building.

The event, which took place late on the night of Monday, February 9, 2026, captured widespread attention online and sparked concern among members of the Alpha Hour community and the general public.

According to closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage reviewed by church authorities and law enforcement, the woman entered the auditorium during a quiet period, appearing to join in prayer before allegedly producing a flammable liquid and pouring it on chairs near the altar.

She then set the substance alight — a moment caught on camera that raised alarm among security personnel. Fortunately, the church’s internal security team acted quickly and managed to contain the blaze before it spread beyond the immediate area, limiting damage to the auditorium and avoiding injuries.

Pastor Agyemang confirmed that although the facility will be temporarily closed for in-person prayer sessions while repairs are carried out, the ministry will continue its activities online. “It will not stop us,” he said, assuring followers that the church will be restored and that Alpha Hour prayer sessions will continue through digital platforms.

Alpha Hour — a daily one-hour prayer meeting held at 12 a.m. GMT and streamed live on platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Zoom — has grown significantly since its inception in 2022. Tens of thousands of people in Ghana and around the world tune in regularly, with followers often referred to as “Alpharians.”
